PSEUDO FUNK
DELETE @ Dusk Till Dawn, Bournemouth
Monthly Residents
Delete is very proud to boast residents as talented as Pseudo Funk. As
well as their monthly appearances at Dusk Till Dawn, they regularly
play at nights in London and beyond, with a steadily increasing profile
in the UK scene and releases on some of the most exciting underground
labels around at the moment.
Tone Def
Tone Def is someone who lives and breathes techno. Having immersed
himself in the scene for some seven years, his underground techno
credentials can't be argued with. He dropped his debut release as Tony
Guinness, the 'Almost EP', on the excellent After-Dinner Recordings net
label, as well as notching up a track on the Metroline compilation
'Metroline Buskers'. As well as future label releases in the pipeline,
he regularly appears at established nights on the London circuit such
as Multivitamins, and now he is behind the new net label Alt Recordings
along with the Delete team.
Heading straight for the weird, darkened corners of minimal techno,
Tone's productions display a deep understanding of what makes people
move, whilst at the same time tweaking the part of the brain that needs
something a little more challenging. His diverse DJ sets attest to
that, and if you pick the right month you can catch him and Mr Smith
pumping out a live set to bring the basement ceiling down.
When he's not knee-deep in twisted beats (which isn't very often) you
can find Tone enthusing about the wonders of Mike Patton, Jamie Oliver
or skulking around doing night-shift work in unfortunate places.
Mr Smith
Having spent 6 years immersing himself in electronic music, Mr Smith
finally unleashed his sound on an unsuspecting public when he hooked up
with Tone Def to form Pseudo Funk. Combining his hefty technical
knowledge with a love of the deepest clicks and pops, he provides the
perfect foil to Tone's obsession with wobbly wrong-ness.
Ever the perfectionist, Mr Smith (better known as Sam to his nearest
and dearest) has been locked into producing tracks since the age of
fifteen, and the launch of Alt Recordings has given him the chance to
share the loops going round inside his head (check 'Out For The
Chopping Block' for a lesson in stripped down sickness).
In March 2007, Pseudo Funk debuted their live set, comprised of two
laptops running Ableton thumping out a hypnotic racket, with live
saxophone piercing filling the gaps. Keep an eye out for the next
installment of this latest side to the Funksters which will be
appearing very soon at an all-night event of some description.
When he's not slicing down beats to their barest component parts and
then re-arranging them, you'll find Sam forcing the sickest Detroit
techno damage (a la Underground Resistance, Basic Channel etc) on
anyone who will listen, even his Nan (so I heard).
